March Pack Meeting
Our annual "Blue & Gold" is returning after a hiatus last year, and is scheduled for Saturday, March 19th, at Elks Lodge. Given the easing of COVID-related restrictions, we will be having dinner again this year. If the weather cooperates, we will have outdoor space to eat as well.
The Pack will provide the pizza and cupcakes, and we are asking all families to contribute side dishes, bring other needed supplies, and assist with set-up or clean-up. So that we know that all items are covered, please use this sign-up sheet to mark your contribution(s) by 3/14. Please RSVP on the 2nd tab as well so we have a head count.
This year, we will combine B&G with our Arrow of Light ceremony, to recognize our AOL scouts who will be graduating from Cub Scouts. Set-up will begin at 3 PM on Saturday, the program will begin at 4:30 and we should be wrapped up by 7 PM.
Our tentative agenda is as follows:
Opening/Welcome
Presentation of Adventure Loops
Presentation of Pinewood Derby Awards
Recognition of Outgoing Adult Leaders
Buffet-Style Dinner
Friends of Scouting Presentation
Arrow of Light Ceremony
Group Photo
Closing
Dance Party (DJ-ing ourselves - please add songs your Scout likes to the sign up sheet linked above)
February Pack Meeting
Saturday, Feb 12th, from 9 AM to 12 PM, at Elks Lodge, is the Pinewood Derby. We have decided to return to an in-person event this year. We are also looking into the possibility of recording the event again this year. Since this is an indoor event, masks will be required regardless of vaccination status.
The rules are the same as past years and listed here PWD rules_Potomac_District_2021.docx
We need all families to register here: Pinewood Derby Registration 2022
As you see, the registration has a link to upload pictures of your cars. This will help the scouts vote on appearance categories as below.
As a reminder siblings are also welcome to race. We gave out all of our cars this year, but more may be purchased at the Scout Shop in Bethesda or on Amazon.
Craftsmanship Awards (Pack Level Only) - voted on by a member of the Elk's lodge
- 1st place medal
- 2nd place medal
Criteria: Originality of concept and effective design execution while meeting all of the racing qualifications (to be judged by an objective party)
Craftsmanship Creativity Certificates for 6 categories, voted on by scouts.:
1 - Best use of imagination
2 - Funniest design
3 - Most creative use of color
4 - Coolest paint job

1st and 2nd place Den winners as well as the 1st place craftsmanship award may compete in the district PWD held later this spring. Additionally, this year, there will be a Council level PWD event in the summer held at Camp Snyder (tentatively scheduled for Saturday June 18th). More details to come on both of those events. If you have trouble with the picture upload, please let the Cub Master know and we can do it next weekend at the drop off.
Car drop off/registration will take place on Friday, 5:30 - 7:00 PM at the Elks lodge. Please make sure that your cars meet the regulations, particularly the 5 oz weight limit as there will not be an opportunity for last minute adjustments at a touch up station. All cars can race, but only those meeting the regulations are eligible to win.

December Pack Meeting
We will be participating in Wreaths Across America, which coordinates wreath-laying ceremonies at Veterans cemeteries across the country. Their motto is "Remember our fallen U.S. veterans. Honor those who serve. Teach your children the value of freedom." We will will plan to meet at 11:30 AM on Saturday, Dec 18th, at Darnestown Presbyterian Church Cemetery (MDDPCD)
The ceremony itself will start promptly at noon. The theme for this month will be "A scout is reverent". We ask that all scouts dress in uniform if possible, and to be extra respectful when in the cemetery.
After the ceremony, we will have a Bobcat ceremony for our newest scouts who have earned their Bobcat badge, and we will also distribute belt loops and pins. We will also distribute Pinewood Derby Cars. The Pinewood Derby will be held in February at the Elks lodge. For our new scout families, the Pinewood Derby is one of the highlights of our scouting year. Scouts make and race cars. More info will follow, but here is a video from last year's race to give you an idea.
November Pack Meeting
November is our Rocket Launch and will be held on Saturday, November 20th, at Mount Airy, MD.
Each registered Scout will be provided a rocket. If friends or siblings want to join, they may bring their own rocket or purchase one in advance for $10. Rockets will be distributed to Den leaders prior to Scouting For Food.
Scouting for Food is an annual food bank collection conducted by Scouts from the National Capital Area Council. Local Scouts distribute notices to homes across the region and return one week later to pick up donated items from our neighbors. Collected food is distributed to needy families throughout the communities of the National Capital Region. Our pack’s food collection will be donated to the Manna Food Center.
We will place notes on doors in the Woodley Gardens (Lion-Bear), Derwood Station (Webelos) and College Gardens (AOLs) neighborhood on Saturday, November 6th.
On Saturday, November 13th, we will return to those houses to collect non-perishable goods. We will need a few volunteers with trucks or SUVs to drop off our collections at Loehmann’s Plaza in Bethesda, before 1 pm on that same day.
October Pack Meeting
This weekend is our October Pack Meeting, which is Cub Scout Carnival, hosted by the Bear Den!
The Carnival will take place at the Elk's Lodge from 3-4.30 PM this Sunday, October 24th.
We will have multiple games, including Hot Lava, Nerf Target Practice, Bean Bag Toss, life size Jenga, a mural station, and a temporary tattoo station. There will also be a popcorn stand, apple cider, and a chance to win prizes!
We will also have a station to make Halloween bags for hospitalized children, which has been one of our annual service projects the last few years.
Siblings, friends, and neighbors invited.
We will need a few volunteers to help with set up, break down, and staffing a few of the stations as follows:
Popcorn Stand: Fill bags with popcorn for guests.
Apple Cider Stand: Fill cups with cider.
Prize Stand: Watch over prizes and redeem tickets for prizes.
Community Service Station: Help scouts decorate and fill bags for hospitalized children.
Tattoo Station: Help scouts apply temporary tattoos.
Jenga: Help set up and supervise life size Jenga.
Please sign up here.
September Pack Meeting
Join us on Sunday, September 26th for our first Pack Meeting of the year. The event is open to anyone interested in learning more about Cub Scouts. We will be holding our Recycled Raingutter Regatta. Scouts will use recycled materials to make a boat to race on rain gutters. Feel free to bring your favorite recycled materials, and the pack will also have plenty to choose from.
Fall Camp Out
The fall camp out will be held Sat - Sun, Oct 2-3, at Patapsco Valley State Park. It is open to all registered scouts and siblings. An adult is required to attend. New members are welcome to attend. Families are encouraged but not required to stay overnight.
Recommended Equipment (Overnight)
Warm sleeping bag, sleeping pad, and pillow. (Temperatures vary widely in October.)
2-4 Person Tent: Larger tents are not recommended. They are not as warm and two large tents would crowd these campsites. Optional tarp or emergency blanket underneath the tent to prevent moisture/reflect heat.
Water bottle, flashlight, emergency whistle
Hat and multiple layers, especially if temperatures drop below 50 degrees overnight.
Other: toothbrush/toothpaste, bug spray, sunscreen, personal first aid kit, etc.
Note: The Pack will have a centralized first aid kit. Families may be able to borrow extra equipment from each other. Just tell your fellow Den parents what you may need.
